The household survey in Pensamiento Liberal Mexicano aimed at understanding factors that influence the election of (or the aspiration towards) housing typologies and building technologies in the indigenous communities of the Oaxaca State, as well as the factors that determine the physical organization and management of the territory.
Moreover, the survey represented an opportunity, for the international students involved in the construction of the “micro-regional center for technology innovation”, to deepen their understanding of emerging lifestyles and housing cultures in the host community. Thirty households, almost one over five families of Pensamiento, were interviewed by Mexican and Italian students around six main themes:
• family history and family composition
• subsistence strategies
• national and international migration
• relation with other urban and rural centres
• access to socio-cultural resources
• use of natural resources
• perception of life conditions
• housing typologies and building technologies.

In particular, housing compounds were deeply analysed through graphic and photografic surveys and through direct questions to the owners/self-builders. Data was elaborated according to an holistic approach and households were classified into four typologies, each representing a different social group, with a different lifestyle. From the survey, the results indicate that the housing typology is a reliable indicator of the social group the family belongs to. Housing typologies are the product of a complex decision-making process, that is influenced by a wide range of factors, such as monetary income and main economic/subsistence activities of the family, experiences of migrations towards Mexico’s major urban centres and USA, security and thermical comfort of building technologies, morfology of the housing plot and – not least – personal aspirations and tastes.

Since 2007, San Giuseppe delle Scalze, a Baroque church located in Montesanto district, has hosted a group of organizations that are present in or developing the neighbourhood through the introduction and presentation of cultural activities.

Le Scalze is the name of the Cooperative that organizes multi- disciplinary cultural activities targeted to the neighborhood of Tarsia-Montesanto. The objective is to revitalizate the neighbourhood and improve life in the communities of the Tarsia-Montesanto district.

PROJECT HISTORY

Archintorno serves as a pioneer institution in Italy for research on DesignBuild activities. The only DesignBuild initiative related to higher education in Italy, Archintorno’s DesignBuild activities include teaching and research at Italian universities.
The EDBKN promotes the implementation, distribution, and sustainability of the DesignBuild methodology.
In recent years, DesignBuild-Studios, a teaching and research model enabling students to take responsibility for developing balanced future living environments, have undertaken architectural projects from design to realisation. They became a new paradigm in architectural education in Europe and all around the world. However, despite the fact that DesignBuild Studios show an exemplary way to combine the synergistic potentials of teaching, research, practice, and development cooperation, they remain a young and changing field that is far from being exhausted. The EDBKN will stimulate the sustainable, practise-related, international and interdisciplinary knowledge-transfer, foster multinational, interdisciplinary cooperation and promote research related to DesignBuild activities.
The research project is funded by the European Union and is conducted by the Technische Universität Berlin in cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology, Archintorno, the German University in Cairo and Dalhousie University.

PROJECT HISTORY

The cultural cooperative Le Nuvole commissioned Archintorno to create an enclosed outdoor play space in the Le Nuvole Fair. This was a place where kids could be left to explore and have fun while their parents strolled through the fair. The main features of our design were:

• Visually distinct and easily recognisable
• Playful appearance
• Utilized re-usable, low cost materials
• Easy to transport, assemble and disassemble
• Minimal waste production.

Our design recreated a castle, a place many children associate with  dreams and fairy tales. We repurposed plastic multi-coloured fruit boxes by using them as building bricks for walls and towers, giving the play space great visibility from within the fair grounds. At the fair’s closing, the fruit boxes were easily disassembled and returned to the farms where they primarily function as grape containers during the annual harvest.
